Editor's Letter

Unique Readers,
Welcome to the first issue of Misfits Monthly, the first online magazine dedicated to those who live outside the borders of convention.
For the longest time, I have wanted to belong to something I can be proud of. When I was little, I waxed nostalgic over cozy-looking cliques of catty popular girls; when I was older, I dreamed of attending an ancient, prestigious university, and now that I am preparing myself for life in the working world, I fantasize about working for the perfect company.
What I have realized, though, is that I am simply not designed for those purposes. Though I constantly dreamed of hanging with the cool kids when I was younger, I didn't realize that whenever they invited me to parties, movies, and meals, I declined, or went, but felt completely out of place. Though I wanted to belong to a prestigious university, I did not realize that they lacked the programs I actually wanted. And though I have recently found myself drooling over illustrious corporations, I fail to see that I would feel trapped should I end up working for one.
What I realized this winter was that, like it or not, I am a Misfit- someone who, according to Webster's Dictionary, "is not suited or is unable to adjust to the circumstances of his or her particular situation." I can't belong to any one group or society or thing- I am a motley creation, and I will have to forge my own path in life.
This, however, does not mean that my long-time dream cannot be achieved. Though I may not be able to belong to a conventional group or following, I can acknowledge my status as a Misfit, and that's something indeed.
Though the world's Misfits may not- and by design cannot- have any sort of organized structure as a whole, it would be impossible to deny us the satisfaction of knowing we are not alone. Indeed, the world is full of Misfits of all sorts of eccentric backgrounds, and I am proud to stand amongst them. Though we cannot unite in any organized way, we can join together in solidarity.
This is why I have created Misfits Monthly. I wish it to serve as a source of solidarity, a forum, a sounding board, and an outlet for Misfits everywhere. Oh. And I want to have fun with it. That, too.
So enjoy, and share your thoughts and ideas! ('Cause if you don't, the "Misfit" community consists of me and my imaginary friends. Tragic!)
Sincerely yours,
-Simone Haruko Smith
